MASSIVEGOOD
“MASSIVEGOOD uses the power of social media to help stop the millions of preventable deaths from HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis and increase maternal and child health in the developing world.
Social networks have revolutionized how we interact. But can they raise awareness and increase funding for some of the most pressing global health issues in the 21st century?
MASSIVEGOOD does both, by creating a worldwide community based on small individual acts of giving. MASSIVEGOOD lets you make a $2 micro-contribution towards major global health causes every time you buy a plane ticket, reserve a hotel room or rent a car.
Available in the USA since early 2010, MASSIVEGOOD allows travelers to make their trip really meaningful and connect with fellow contributors on this website, a social network for those committed to building a healthier world. To ensure that all travelers can make a difference, leaders in the travel and tourism industry have joined with global health organizations to support MASSIVEGOOD in an impressive private-public coalition.”

Daylight Savings and Energy Wastings
“Daylight savings time was introduced to save energy, but it turns out it actually does the opposite. The economist Matthew Kotchen looked at how the 2006 switch to daylight savings time in certain Indiana counties affected electricity use:”
The result of the study showed that electricity use went up
in the counties adopting daylight saving time in 2006, costing $8.6
million more in household electricity bills. The conclusion reached by
Kotchen and Grant was that while the lighting costs were reduced in the
afternoons by daylight saving, the greater heating costs in the
mornings, and more use of air-conditioners on hot afternoons more than
offset these savings. Kotchen said the results were more “clear and
unambiguous” than results in any other paper he had presented.
“I
don’t have strong feelings about daylight savings time. It’s a nice
surprise in the fall, and a brief bummer in the spring. Overall, I like
having sunlight for more of the evening. But to the extent that it
exists to save energy, it looks like its time to reevaluate the
practice. And I’m sure it costs our economy real money in missed
appointments and general confusion. “

Soular Backpacks
“Neon Green has decided to bring solar to the fashion forward among us,
from tween girls to guys working in the financial district. The makers
of solar bags have come up with a variety of designs that incorporate
thin-film solar cells into trendy bags with “soular” for off-grid
charging and backup power for hand-held gadgets. Neon Green claims the
bags are so awesome, they’ll “transform [you] from a mere mortal to a super hero with soular powers.” Now that’s quite a statement. “

Sunset falls on a Maasai boy
“Beach and bush only begin to describe the variety of offerings awaiting visitors to this vaguely trapezoidal nation south of Sudan and Ethiopia whose southern edge slips into the Indian Ocean. • Often described as an Africa in miniature because it provides a taste of nearly all the continent’s attractions, Kenya is peopled by a welter of different ethnic groups, each having arrived in one of countless migrations from the far corners of the continent and beyond. • Want to see the world’s most intense traffic jam? Check out the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara National Reserve.”

CO2 CUBES
“The CO2 CUBES project is an innovative approach which could help bring to life the concept of carbon dioxide emissions, giving a real scale to something that can seem quite abstract. In doing so, it should help people to better understand their contribution to climate change, and what they might do to reduce their impacts.”

Manhattan Tree House Pavilion

Manhattan Tree House Pavilion by Andrew van Leeuwen
“The Manhattan Tree House Pavilion was designed by Andrew van Leeuwen from Build LLC. The pavillion has completed October 6th after only four weeks since the idea was conceived and designed. The structure’s envelope is made from 29 prefabricated plywood ribs and wrapped with fabric creating a glowing “tube-lounge”. The tube rests on four 26-feet tall by 14-inch diameter logs. A plywood and steel prefabricated staircase allows visitors to access the tree house floor which is 10 feet above the ground.”

The World of 100

The World of 100 By Toby Ng Kwong
“This is a self-initiated project based on the
scenario – If the world were a village of 100 people. There are a few
different versions of this text in circulation about the world’s
statistics. I found the data very striking and neatly summarises the
world that we live in. So I used information graphics to re-tell the
story in another creative way. I designed a set of 20 posters, which
contain most of the information. I used simple vector graphics that
related to a statistic in order to present the information in the
simplest and most accessible way.”

Antennae Galaxies
NASA Hubble Space Telescope image
This image of the Antennae galaxies is the sharpest yet of this merging
pair of galaxies. During the course of the collision, billions of stars
will be formed. The brightest and most compact of these star birth
regions are called super star clusters.
